Presentations on the topics mentioned below are highly appreciated, especially when different assement methods are compared (e.g. morphological assessment and metabarcoding). Talks will be short presentations (10 min) followed by a brief discussion (5 min). If you want to contribute with a talk, please include this in your registration email until July 30th. 

Aims of the workshop

The workshop aims at collecting information and experiences from the different rapid assessment methods for biodiversity assessments applied within the MI2 project. The idea is to foster a discussion about the usefulness and standardization of rapid assessment methods in future baseline- and impact assessment studies. Methods to be discussed will be DNA barcoding, DNA metabarcoding, eDNA and proteome fingerprinting. 

Key questions to be addressed are: 

  1. Are results from rapid assessment methods comparable to classical morphological assessments? 
  2. Some methods provide qualitative data or relative abundances only – is this adequate for impact assessments?
  3. Can rapid assessment methods replace classical morphological assessments?
  4. How do methods have to be improved for routine application in rapid assessments?

We envisage having the various assessment methods presented in introductory talks during different sessions to finally discuss the application of the different methods in future assessments, especially the development of best-practice guidelines and standardization protocols. 

Preliminary schedule: 

Day 1 – Quantitative methods: 

DNA barcoding (including reference libraries)

Proteome fingerprinting using MALDI-TOF MS

Discussion on Quantitative methods

Day 2 – Qualitative methods: 

DNA metabarcoding

eDNA analyses

Discussion on quantitative methods in particular and rapid assessment methods in general
